Madama Butterfly at Lyric Opera of Kansas City

By Anna Drakhlis

The production of Madama Butterfly by the Lyric Opera of Kansas City was more than satisfying. The voice of Marie Platte, who sang the role of Chio-Chio-San (Madama Butterfly) was superior to other leading role singers of the previous season. The Lyric Opera does an excellent job of choosing the appropriate actors for the characters each singer portray. Even though the operas are not performed in English, the language barrier is overcome by the subtitle screen located above the stage.

The costumes and the set up on the stage also contribute to the overall good impression of the Lyric Opera productions. In the previous season there were tiny drawbacks in certain productions; for example, in Barber of Seville, the instruments drowned out the singer's voices in certain parts, but this season's production of Madama Butterfly was flawless. By far, this opera was the most captivating one I have had the chance to attend.
