Russian school

By Mariya Voldman

By the initiative of Larisa Yakhnis, in February 1998, a group of children began to learn the Russian language. All of them are from Russian-speaking families. 15 children of different ages from 4 to 14 attend this school. Ninel Lipovetskaya, at left, is a teacher at this school. Children of all levels of knowledge came to this school. That is why Nelly organized two groups. Children in the first one learn basic Russian grammar , translate from English into Russian, and compose various short stories from pictures. The children in the second one learn to read, spell, answer questions, and make simple sentences.

Kids are interested in learning Russian and taking part in different performances and celebrations in Russian. In March 1998 there was a party called "All moms are needed." For V-Day World War II, in May 1998, our kids prepared a musical performance "We will never forget those days". They honored veterans of World War II. Children also prepared a party "The Golden Atumn." The purpose of the Russian school is to make kids interested in Russian language, literature, and its famous authors. A knowledge of Russian language will help kids to communicate with their Russian-speaking friends, with their parents, and their grandparents.
